Mumbai | Ajeykumar Jadhav | 13 July -
Lakhs of Mumbai residents who have temporarily shifted to rented accommodation due to ongoing redevelopment projects are facing uncertainty over their inclusion in the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls. The absence of clear guidelines for such voters has raised concerns that many eligible citizens could be left out of the SIR process.
Thousands of buildings across Mumbai are currently under redevelopment, forcing residents to relocate until construction is completed. However, there is no clear policy on how SIR forms of these voters should be processed while they are living at temporary addresses.
According to information received from the Ghatkopar Electoral Registration Officer's office, the Election Commission of India has not yet issued specific guidelines regarding the SIR process for voters residing in redevelopment-affected buildings. The matter has been referred to the Central Election Commission, and further action will be taken based on the directions issued by the Commission.
The office also clarified that even if the names of eligible voters do not appear in the draft electoral roll, they can still be included in the final electoral roll, subject to the Election Commission's instructions.
Despite this clarification, uncertainty continues among redevelopment-affected residents regarding their voting rights. Many fear that registering at their temporary address could change their constituency, while the procedure for retaining their original electoral registration remains unclear.
Considering the large number of redevelopment projects in Mumbai, citizens and housing organisations have urged the Election Commission to issue clear and uniform guidelines to ensure that no eligible voter is deprived of the SIR process or their constitutional right to vote.
Attention is now focused on the Election Commission of India, which is expected to clarify the procedure for redevelopment-affected voters and ensure that lakhs of eligible voters are not excluded from the electoral roll.
